Gadadhar Abhyudaya Prakalpa
Background:
India has a large section of street and rural children who lack basic necessities such as food, nutrition, medical care and education. They live in a wretched condition surrounded by poverty, illiteracy, superstition, and narrow-mindedness. The Gadadhar Abhyudaya Prakalpa (GAP) aims to improve the affairs of these needy and backward children.
Aims of GAP:
- To instil moral and cultural values in children
- To educate them with special coaching on their school subjects
- To inculcate a sense of cleanliness and hygiene
- To nourish them for their physical development
- To prepare them to be good citizens of India
Composition of Program:
The GAP program comprises various activities to aid in the physical, mental and intellectual development of the aforesaid targeted children between the ages of 5 and 12. The class is conducted daily (except Saturday and Sunday) from 4 to 6 pm.
Implementation:
- Monks, paid teachers, and volunteers implement the project at the Ashrama. The project includes various activities such as classes on school subjects, yoga and physical exercises, meditation, painting, singing, value education classes, etc.
- Students are provided basic training in health and hygiene, toilet practice, the necessity of safe drinking water, brushing teeth, washing hands, clipping nails, using a mosquito net at night, etc.
- Periodical health check-ups are organized to monitor their body weight, height, etc. At the end of each day’s programme, food supplements are given to all the participants.
- The children are periodically provided with the following items: umbrellas/raincoats, footwear, warm clothes, and toiletry items (e.g., toothpaste, toothbrush, tongue-cleaner, soap, oil, nail-clipper, towel, etc.), etc.
A hundred (100) children participated in the program from 2020 to 2021.
